Better bots Capture Better Data

MantabotThe Machine Inside: Biomechanics is an exhibit at the Field Musem in Chicago. The exhibit shows how the marvels of natural engineering have inspired ingenious man-made mechanisms, including the "MantaBot," a robotic manta ray developed by Hilary Bart-Smith and her team at BIER (Bio-Inspired Engineering Research) Lab.

The MantaBot is so lifelike in motion that real fish accept it as one of their own. Biologists will be able to use it to quietly monitor the conditions of life at sea—for example, to check in on endangered species in coral reefs.
